How can that happen from a fall?

In the day time show of All My Children, Annie's father (Walter Novak) was pushed out of a window by Annie's brother (Richie Novak). From that fall he became deaf. I don't understand how he became deaf from a fall. Than again it is a soap opera. Maybe they made it up. What do you think?
