What would you consider animal abuse?

When my dog is bad i slap her- not hard, but it sure does teach her. I have lost a couple animal loving friends because they have seen me do it. really, i don't hurt her. its like a parent a child. its not abuse, just consequences. If they are bad i think they shouldn't be smacked until they are running away from you, just a small "Pow" on the nose or .
